Lazarus syndrome is the spontaneous return of circulation after failed attempts at resuscitation. Its occurrence has been noted in medical literature at least 25 times since 1982. Also called Lazarus phenomenon, it takes its name from the biblical story of Lazarus, who was raised from the dead by Jesus.
Occurrences of the syndrome are rare and the causes are not well understood. One theory for the phenomenon is that a chief factor (though not the only one) is the buildup of pressure in the chest as a result of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The relaxation of pressure after resuscitation efforts have ended is thought to allow the heart to expand, triggering the heart's electrical impulses and restarting the heartbeat. Other possible factors are hyperkalaemia or high doses of adrenaline.

SEBUAH mahkamah majistret di sini diberitahu bagaimana seorang lelaki yang disahkan mati kemudian didapati hidup semula selepas setengah jam, sebelum betul-betul meninggal dunia selang dua hari berikutnya.
Dikenali sebagai sindrom Lazarus, kejadian itu merupakan antara 38 kes direkodkan di serata dunia setakat ini. Pesakit Michael Wilkinson, 23, bagaimanapun menghembuskan nafas terakhir pada 3 Februari lalu.
Mendiang didiagnosis menghidapi serangan jantung setelah ditemui ibunya dalam keadaan terbaring di katil. Doktor yang membuat rawatan awal mengisytiharkan dia sudah mati sebelum nadinya kembali berdenyut 30 minit kemudian.
Penolong jabatan koroner Derek Baker ketika menyoal ibu pesakit, Susan Horrigan, 44, memaklumkan, sebaik anaknya hidup, mendiang dipindahkan ke Royal Preston Hospital di Lancashire.
Pesakit itu ditempatkan di unit rawatan rapi dan menjalani pembedahan kecemasan. Namun keluarga tersebut memberitahu, mereka ketika itu sudah bersedia dengan kemungkinan mangsa meninggal dunia pada akhirnya. - Agensi
